Spearfishing Code of Conduct
As spearfishers we respect the environment and all life within it. An ability to take only those fish intended to be taken means it can be conducted sustainably and with minimal impact to the surrounding environment. It promotes health and well being amongst its practitioners and an appreciation of underwater ecology. When spearfishing:
- Consider the safety of yourself and other people as your priority at all times.
- Show courtesy and respect when interacting with other water users.
- Respect the danger of spearguns, ensure they are unloaded when out of the water and never point them at anything you do not intend to shoot.
- Display a dive flag visible for 360 degrees and dive with a buddy.
- Know your limits and that of your buddies and dive within them. Understand the dangers of the activity, including shallow water blackout and how to avoid it.
- Respect our marine life and never taking more than your personal needs.
- Be conscious of your movements in the water and avoid disturbing fragile fauna and flora.
- When anchoring select a spot which minimizes damage to the environment.
- Know and at all times obey boating regulations.
- Know and at all times obey fisheries regulations. Be aware of size and possession limits, of seasonal closures, protected areas and no take species.
- Always co-operate with regulatory officers performing their duty, they are there to protect the resource and guard against illegal activity.
- Guard our seas from law breakers by reporting suspicious or illegal activity to the proper authorities.
- Take care of your catch and maximise its use. Clean your catch at a suitable location and dispose of any off cuts thoughtfully.
- Each one of us is a public face for spearfishing, always behave in a responsible manner.
